Question Of The Week: What Should New Facility Managers Do?

Posted by Heidi Schwartz

This week’s question comes from the Facilities Management Group on LinkedIn.

What advice do you have for a new facility manager taking over from an existing facility manager? I am essentially taking over facility management duties from someone in that position who is leaving the company, and I am trying to figure out where to start? What advice do you have? What to do’s would you recommend in order to gain a handle of the site I am taking over?

I assume I will need to look at the following areas in order to get to know and understand how things are currently run:

  • Cleaning schedules
  • SLAs
  • HVAC
  • Elevator
  • Biometric scanning
  • Fire prevention
  • Understanding tenant installation
  • Generator

I also think I’ll need to find out what the building owner covers and is responsible for, for example, who covers the cost of things like exterior window cleaning, pest control, etc.

Are there any facility managers out there who can offer guidance regarding these details? All insight would be greatly appreciated.
