By integrating the first multi-technology contactless smart card reader into select Latitude E-Family laptops, the combined solution helps end-users benefit from the enhanced security of multi factor authentication and the convenience of using one card for logical and physical access control. When used in conjunction with other components of the HID on the DesktopTM solution (HID iCLASS® contactless smart cards and naviGOTM software), the Dell Latitude E-Family laptop can help organizations improve risk management across the entire enterprise.

Appealing to organizations that use HID contactless cards to access their building each day, select Dell Latitude E-Family laptops come with a contactless smart card reader embedded in the keyboard’s palm rest, enabling the use of an iCLASS card to authenticate to the laptop. By combining HID’s installed base and contactless technology with a mass market PC manufacturer, this innovation helps users implement strong authentication.

“Integrating contactless smart card technology in PCs with one of the top manufacturers is a major advancement for the smart card industry,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance. “This innovation demonstrates HID Global’s commitment to developing smart card technology that makes it more convenient and cost-effective for enterprises to implement a higher level of PC and network security.”

“HID Global is honored to be recognized by the Smart Card Alliance for providing vision and leadership to the industry,” said Denis Hébert, president and CEO of HID Global. “By seeking partnerships with industry leaders like Dell, we aim to provide more value to customers in terms of convenience and cost effectiveness.”

Because of the large installed base of iCLASS physical access control cards, HID contactless technology can be ideal for integrated physical/logical access. Depending on the way that strong authentication is implemented, organizations implementing HID on the Desktop will see significant improvements in terms of cost of ownership, ease of use, speed of deployment, and overall security provided against other complex authentication solutions on the market. HID on the Desktop provides corporate enterprises with choice; the ability to deploy the most “risk appropriate” authentication depending on the employee role or job function.
