Q. We frequently experience UPS tripping, which results in data loss and damage to our systems.

What precautionary measures could help me overcome this problem? All our systems (except photocopiers, printers, and other motorized equipment) are on UPS.

  1. In addition to maintenance there must be a TVSS (Transient Voltage Surge Suppression) device upstream from the UPS unit, to prevent spikes from damaging not only the protected loads but the UPS system itself. This is vital for critical loads in that incoming utility power is unrefined, and “clean” power is essential for data system reliability. Compare the cost of a TVSS to the value of the network, databases, etc. and you’ll find that it’s cheap insurance. Also, if the UPS at your facility is more than ten years old you should budget for an upgrade. Liebert produces an impressive industry-leading line of UPS equipment suitable for any application.

  2. We have had a UPS unit for 8 years. Never had that problem. I guess I would ask a few questions.

    1) do you do have a Preventative Maintenance program for the unit and for the batteries
    2) are your batteries in good shape
    3) how long have your batteries been in the unit – recommendation is to change them out evry 3 to 5 years
