I am looking for additional ways to increase recycling or introduce green initiatives. Any suggestions?

  1. As an FM, I was able (and supported) to contract with companies that provided single stream waste programs. However on the business unit side of the company, there was an insistence (for appearance sakes only) that we keep the desk side recycling cans. OH’ the horror when it was discovered that at the end of the day, all of the waste landed up in the same container! Long story short, by the BU not wanting to communicate how recycling was working in the building, ultimately resulted in lack of credibility / buy in to other “Green” programs. I.e. keeping cardboard out of the waste stream as it was a commodity when properly collected that we were able to sell.

I understand the single stream is not an option for many FM’s, however the point is, explain the workings and expectations of your program, putting a monitory/$ value to recycling and green efforts . Simply doing it for show or to feel good is not advised!
