The International Facility Management Association closed out its 2017 conference in Houston with Awards of Excellence, a Chair Citation for Workplace Evolutionaries group, and new class of IFMA Fellows.

The annual awards recognize outstanding achievements of IFMA members, chapters, councils, and communities of practice. “2017 ushered in what I am calling, ‘The Year of Communication.’ At IFMA, we’ve examined every channel of our communications. Our chapters, councils and communities are experiencing the same challenges that we face as a global organization,” said IFMA President and CEO, Tony Keane, CAE. “This year’s award recipients are no strangers to this fast-paced climate, and have persevered to achieve excellence — both in their work and in their contributions to IFMA and the FM industry.”

IFMA’s Workplace Evolutionaries Community, And New Fellows Also Highlighted

Also at the banquet event on October 20, Kate North, managing director, Workplace Innovation Advisory Services for Colliers-International in the Greater Chicago area, was honored for her contributions to IFMA and to the FM profession. A Chair Citation was presented to North by 2017-2018 chair of IFMA’s board of directors William M. O’Neill, CFM.

“As global chair of IFMA’s Workplace Evolutionaries (WE) Community, Kate North has led a group of forward-thinking workplace strategists to accelerate research, knowledge and innovation around the emerging workplace,” said O’Neill. “Kate and the WE Community know the workplace is changing; but instead of watching it unfold, they’re making it happen.”

In 2012, North and a group of passionate workplace strategists created the Workplace Evolutionaries (WE) Community of Practice within IFMA, to stimulate new ways of thinking about the future of work through learning and networking events, published research, monthly webinars and a repository of workplace knowledge. Kate has been the global chair of the WE Community since its founding, and she has co-authored the popular books “Work on the Move” and “Work on the Move 2”.

During the October 20 event, the IFMA Fellows Class of 2017 was also recognized. The association has named three new IFMA Fellows: Collins Osayamwen, CFM, FMP, IFMA Fellow, co-founder and managing partner, SheltercareFM Consult, Nigeria; Rick Corea, IFMA Fellow, director of global Facilities, ON Semiconductor, Phoenix, AZ; and James P. Whittaker, P.E., CFM, CEFP, FRICS, IFMA Fellow, director of engineering services, Americas, JLL, Chantilly, VA.

Being named an IFMA Fellow is the highest honor the association bestows upon members. The Fellowship program was established in 1992 to recognize members’ lifetime contributions to the association and the facility management community. When considering a candidate for Fellowship, the nominating committee assesses professional experience and accomplishments; association involvement; and how that person has enriched the profession.

Osayamwen is a global ambassador for the FM, committed to increasing awareness of the profession in Africa through government advocacy, speaking on FM-related topics and developing student programs. Having joined IFMA in 2001, he served as the IFMA Foundation’s Ambassador to Africa; and is currently the Interim Vice Chair for the Nigeria FM Initiative, whose goal is to provide a national platform for the promotion and continuous development of FM to the government of Nigeria. In his role as Cofounder and Managing Partner of SheltercareFM Consult, he provides leadership to more than 150 staff members, sets direction for the organization, and develops vision and strategies to deliver world-class solutions to multilateral and bilateral organizations and national governments.

Corea has devoted more than 36 years to excellence and improvement in facility management, through IFMA’s Greater Phoenix and Malaysia Chapters; as a mentor for the Arizona State University (ASU) education and research programs; and as the architect and driver of IFMA’s Greater Phoenix Student Chapter, extending its internship program internationally. Corea has received many awards individually and on behalf of his company, including a 2016 Citation from the Chair of IFMA’s Board of Directors, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from IFMA’s Greater Phoenix Chapter. As Director of Global Facilities for ON Semiconductor in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, his innovative approach to managing each facility has resulted in streamlined policies and procedures, earning ON Semiconductor the Professional Organization of the Year award for five years from IFMA’s Greater Phoenix Chapter.

Whittaker is a Past Chair of IFMA’s Board of Directors and has served on the IFMA Foundation’s Board of Trustees, created IFMA’s Standards Committee, and led the review and revision of IFMA’s ethics policies as Chair of the Ethics Committee. As Founding Chair of IFMA’s FM Research and Benchmarking Institute (RBI), he led the development of the RBI charter, Founder’s Circle, Development Council, and establishment of policies to organize and further FM research. The breadth of Whittaker’s contributions to IFMA, the American National Standards Institute, the National Research Council, the U.S. Department of State, the National Institute of Building Sciences, and many other organizations and academic institutions speak to his focus, energy and service to the FM profession. He has a leadership role in the U.S. ANSI, International Organization for Standardization standards refinement, which is crucial to elevating the validity and value of IFMA’s educational programs. With more than 30 years of experience in the facilities and engineering industries, Whittaker is the Director of Engineering Services – Americas for JLL.
