The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognize 183 ENERGY STAR partners for outstanding contributions to public health and the environment.

2019 ENERGY STAR Awards Announced | Facility Executive - Creating Intelligent Buildings

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are honoring 183 ENERGY STAR partners for outstanding contributions to public health and the environment. The awardees are comprised of Fortune 500 companies, schools, retailers, manufacturers, home builders, and commercial building owners and operators. These parties have demonstrated national leadership in cost-saving energy efficient solutions, according to EPA and DOE. Recipients of the 2019 ENERGY STAR Awards come from 37 states, representing a broad range of energy efficiency accomplishments.

The ENERGY STAR Awards will be presented in Washington, DC, at the Washington Hilton Hotel on April 11, 2019. EPA assistant administrator for Air and Radiation, Bill Wehrum, and Sara Neff, senior vice president of Kilroy Realty, will deliver keynote presentations.

“I applaud the 2019 ENERGY STAR Award Winners,” said Wehrum. “Their innovation and leadership enhance America’s economic competitiveness. Reducing costly energy waste improves air quality and public health while protecting the environment.”

Below are examples of how several ENERGY STAR Award Winners are taking action:

A.O. Smith (Milwaukee, WI) manufactures an extensive array of ENERGY STAR certified water heaters. A.O. Smith played a pivotal role partnering with ENERGY STAR to develop a nationwide ENERGY STAR product finder tool that allows consumers to identify contractors with experience installing highly efficient, heat pump water heaters.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) (Baltimore, MD) supported the construction of more than 3,000 ENERGY STAR certified homes in 2018. BGE engaged home builders, home energy raters, and HVAC contractors with ENERGY STAR through online and in-person trainings. BGE also applied a multi-channel approach to promote a wide array of ENERGY STAR certified products to residential and commercial customers.

Bozzuto Management Company (Greenbelt, MD) manages over 255 multifamily communities along the East Coast, Northeast and Chicago. Bozzuto has pursued 100% benchmarking in ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager® for all managed assets, achieving more than 3% reduction in site energy usage across its entire portfolio over 2017 with a calculated energy cost savings over $4 million dollars. Bozzuto also achieved ENERGY STAR certification for 24 managed communities in 2018.

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS)(Ashburn, VA) is the third-largest school district in Virginia. An ENERGY STAR Partner for 21 years, in 2018 LCPS earned ENERGY STAR certification for 70 buildings, saved more than $5 million dollars in energy costs, and prevented the emissions of more than 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. LCPS also benchmarked 100% of facilities in EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager® tool, totaling more than 10 million square feet.

Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) is the largest public school district in Iowa, educating more than 31,000 children each year, and is receiving Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence recognition. Key 2018 accomplishments include: Saving more than $16 million and preventing the emissions of more than 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide since 2008, while achieving an average portfolio-wide ENERGY STAR score of 79, an increase of more than two percent from the previous year; and utilizing the ENERGY STAR Treasure Map for K-12 Schools to complete building tune-up audits, identifying savings opportunities in 15 buildings.

HanesBrands (Winston-Salem, NC) is a marketer of everyday basic apparel with 68,000 employees manufacturing and distributing its brands, including: Hanes, Champion, DIM, Maidenform, Bali, Playtex and Bonds. The company is receiving Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence recognition.Key 2018 accomplishments include: Reducing energy intensity by 3%, equal to an annual energy cost avoidance of $2.3 million. Since 2007, energy intensity has improved 23.7%, avoiding an energy expenditure of $223 million; and implementing projects to increase the utilization of biomass, develop wastewater sludge to energy capabilities, recover wastewater heat, relight 10 facilities with LEDs and reduce boiler blowdown through reverse osmosis to save more than $10.9 million annually.

LG Electronics (Englewood Cliffs, NJ) ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year –Sustained Excellence Award for continued leadership in protecting the environment through energy efficient home appliances and consumer electronics products. LG’s key accomplishments in 2018 include: Almost three-quarters of LG product models across various categories were ENERGY STAR certified. The number of LG ENERGY STAR models increased in 2018 by 31% for room air conditioners and 14% for refrigerators and computers. And LG earned the 2018 ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for breakthrough inverter variable-speed compressors in room air conditioners, delivering up to 40% efficiency improvements.

National Grid (Waltham, MA) is an electricity and natural gas delivery company that connects nearly 7 million customers to vital energy sources through its networks in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. National Grid Rhode Island is receiving Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence recognition. The company ranked third in the nation by American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) in energy efficiency policy and programs, earning a perfect score from ACEEE for utility policies and programs in Rhode Island for the fifth year in a row.

Schneider Electric (Louisville, KY) provides energy management and automation services for clients worldwide and is receiving Partner of the Year-Sustained Excellence recognition. Key 2018 accomplishments include: Benchmarking more than 25,000 properties using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and Target Finder tools, including more than 10,000 water and 2,400 waste management benchmarks for clients; supporting more than 600 properties in earning ENERGY STAR certification with 11 properties earning certification for the first time; and assisting more than 200 school districts, county and city governments, and non-commercial entities with ENERGY STAR benchmarking and data management through its performance contracting groups.
