Texas is famous for having cricket problems. “It just does not get cold enough here to eliminate them in the winter. They just keep multiplying,” says David Peterson of Service Bros., a building service contractor in North Richland Hills, TX. Peterson is referring to thousands of crickets lining walls and sidewalks, sometimes to a depth of as much as six inches.

“One of my customers is a bank, and the crickets were drawn to the bank by the security lights,” says Peterson. “Soon, the crickets were in the walls and ceiling of the building, where they eventually died. The smell was horrendous, and the dead crickets attracted mice and rats that also eventually died in the walls.”

To tackle the problem, Peterson had to remove the source: he hauled away thousands of cricket, mice, and rat carcasses in four 55-gallon drums. However, the smell lingered, employees took ill, and customers refused to go into the bank altogether.

Peterson tried several methods to rid the bank of the malodor, but nothing worked. Then Peterson’s jansan distributor suggested he put two ozone generators manufactured by U.S. Products to work. “We turned them on at night, and by the next day, you could hardly smell anything,” says Peterson. “No one could believe the odor was finally gone.”

“Now, every time there is the slightest smell of any kind at the bank, they say they want me to ozone it,” says Peterson.
