Elevators And Code Compliance: A Short Story

The theme for 2018 Building Safety Month, taking place during the month of May, is "Building Codes Save Lives." And that includes building codes for elevator safety.

May 1 kicked off 2018 Building Safety Month (BSM), a public awareness campaign celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide during the month of May for the past 38 years to help businesses and individuals understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures.elevator safety Headed up by the International Code Council (ICC), the campaign reinforces the need for the adoption of modern, regularly-updated building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system. The theme for Building Safety Month in 2018 is “Building Codes Save Lives.” And that includes building codes for elevator safety.

National Elevator Industry Inc. (NEII), a trade association for the building transportation industry, supports BSM’s mission to educate the public on what their jurisdictions, associations, and governments are doing to keep them safe. As buildings grow taller and more innovative, it’s essential for building owners and facility management to adopt the modern, regularly-updated building codes to uphold that high level of safety, notes NEII.

Billions of people rely on elevators each day to get them to their destinations safely. But who are the heroes who set the standards for one of the world’s safest modes of transportation? Take a look at infographic below (created by NEII) to discover who the players are in building transportation — and what it takes for these heroes to develop, adopt and enforce the codes that keep our elevators safe.
