Farpointe Smart Card Readers with OSDP

The Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) can now be added to Farpointe Data smart card readers.

Users can now add the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) to Farpointe Data smart card readers. OSDP is a communication standard that brings consistency, as well as heightened security and interoperability between different manufacturers’ devices.

smart card readersAdopted by the Security Industry Association (SIA), OSDP allows smart card readers to interface with control panels or other security management systems. It is IP-extensible for next generation security applications and fosters interoperability among security devices regardless of system architecture.

OSDP handles smart cards, constantly monitoring wiring to protect against threats and can serve as a solution for high-end encryption, such as required in federal applications. This specification for handling LEDs, text, buzzers, and other feedback mechanisms provides a rich, user centric access control environment.

The SIA Access Control & Identity Subcommittee is in the process of making OSDP v 2.1.6 an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard. Many manufacturers have already implemented OSDP while other OSDP devices are in development. To encourage this, the SIA is releasing tools that will ensure that these numbers continue to grow.

Delta smart card readers can presently employ the OSDP standard. Delta Contactless Smart card Readers and Credentials comprise an advanced radio frequency identification (RFID) solution for electronic access control. Delta makes use of NXP Semiconductors’ MIFARE® technology. It also supports a wide range of third-party contactless 13.56-MHz smartcard-based credentials, as well as the entire range of Delta credentials.

The Delta line features MAXSecure™ and Valid ID™ in addition to optional MIFARE® DESFire® EV1 application support. MAXSecure provides a higher security handshake, or code, between the credential and reader that may help prevent credential duplication. If credential tampering does occur, Valid ID can detect it and alert the access control system. In addition, credentials based upon MIFARE DESFire EV1 offer even more protection using a higher security encryption technology standard.

Delta MIFARE DESFire EV1 Credentials offer 128-bit AES; a 56-bit card serial number (CSN); up to 28 applications and 32 files per application on each credential; and 2K-, 4K-, and 8K-byte memory sizes.

The 13.56-MHz Delta includes enhanced smart card encryption. It installs indoors or outdoors with a lifetime warranty on all readers. Delta smart card readers are able to read the sector (access control) data and/or card serial number from all ISO 14443 Type A & B compliant credentials. Delta credentials meet the ISO standard and are programmed at Farpointe with a Delta compatible secure key. During Delta’s validation process the credential’s secure key is challenged by the reader. If the secure keys match, the reader will read the card’s sector data, if the secure keys do not match, the reader will only read the credential’s CSN.
