Focus On Hygiene Important Year-Round

Cold and flu season may be past for this year, but that doesn't mean facilities should relax on hygiene awareness for building occupants.

Each year, poor health costs the U.S. economy $227 billion from “lost productivity” due to employee absenteeism because of illness, or “presenteeism” — when employees report to work but illness keeps them from performing at their best. No matter the type of office facility, there are several measures facility management can take to help improve their building occupants’ hygiene.

Cold and flu season ended back in March, but that doesn’t mean facilities should relax on hygiene awareness. On this year’s World Health Day (April 7, 2017), Carrie Schuster, marketing manager, Sustainability and Hygiene at SCA, shared several steps businesses can take to provide the resources and clean environments that help limit the spread of illness, reduce costs, and help keep staff and occupants healthy.

Educate. Outfit restrooms and kitchenettes with signs that remind employees of the importance of hand hygiene. By prompting restroom visitors with the necessity of handwashing, this helps to share knowledge of healthy habits that impact well-being.
