FRIDAY FUNNY: No beer on the job? We strike!

In a time when budgets have been cut to the bone and fringe benefits are merely a fading memory, workers at the Carlsberg brewery in Denmark are walking out. Why? A new policy only permits workers to consume beer during lunch hour...and only in the employee cafeteria.

In a time when budgets have been cut to the bone and fringe benefits are merely a fading memory, workers at the Carlsberg brewery in Denmark are walking out. Why? A new policy imposed on April 1 of this year (no joke) only permits workers to consume beer during lunch hour…and only in the employee cafeteria.

Approximately 800 walked out on April 7 in protest after beer coolers were taken away from various locations around the brewery. Another 250 stopped the flow of the Danish brew on Thursday.

Nick McMaster of Newser.com reports, “Apparently, drinking three beers—other than those consumed at lunch—is a longstanding tradition at the brewery, and not one employees are willing to give up lightly.”

From the Associated Press:

The only restriction was “that you could not be drunk at work,’’ said Jens Bekke, company spokesman.

Carlsberg’s truck drivers joined the strike in sympathy — even though they are exempt from the new rules, Bekke said. The truck drivers are permitted to bring three beers from the canteen.

Now that’s reassuring, isn’t it? Bekke states the trucks have alcohol ignition locks preventing the drivers from driving drunk.
