As we welcome October, many of our thoughts turn the beautiful hues of fall leaves, sweater weather, pumpkin spice-flavored everything, and of course, Halloween. For the adventurous and brave, that means getting scared half to death at haunted houses crawling with zombies, scary clowns, murderous maniacs, and blood-thirsty aliens.

And people do love to be scared! Haunted houses are now the single most popular way to celebrate Halloween in the U.S. According to Hauntworld.com, more than $1 billion of the $10 billion that will be spent on Halloween this year will be for tickets at themed haunted sites.

Evolving way past Halloween’s traditional pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and hayrides, today’s haunted attractions strive to make guests feel like they’re experiencing a real-life horror movie. The most successful attractions use computer animation, giant monsters, talented actors, and even virtual reality to scare the heck out of their guests. Many haunts have added new attractions such as zombie paintball, zombie laser tag, and escape rooms.
