Friday Funny: What Could You Do With A Bag Of Concrete?

What could you create with a bag of concrete? Most of us would be challenged to come up with something more imaginative than a patio paver.

But for three creative, handy guys, the QUIKRETE® One Bag Wonder 2.0 contest was an opportunity to design and build something amazing… and win some money too! The annual contest challenges participants to create unique, high-quality do-it-yourself projects using only one bag of any QUIKRETE concrete mix.

This year’s winner is Joey Eddington, an industrial design student at Brigham Young University, who designed and built a floating concrete ghost table. His supernatural, gravity defying creation earned him the first place prize of $2,500.

“As an industrial design student, I am interested in finding new ways to use common materials,” explained Eddington. “I was inspired by paper mache to rethink what concrete can do. My table is made only out of canvas soaked in a mixture of Quikrete and a cement polymer. I saturated several canvas layers and draped them over a table. When they dried I removed the inside table and was left with a new one! I was excited to make a new piece of furniture but even more excited to find a new way to look at cement and create things from it.”

Second place: Bernie Solo’s mid-century lamp.

In second place, Bernie Solo won $1,500 with his mid-century lamp. Roger Young’s outdoor fountain finished third, winning him $500.

“Because my design shows off natural materials, the concrete now belongs with the warmth of the wood as a very earthy texture, showing its natural origins,” said Bernie Solo.

The One Bag Wonder 2.0 contest was judged by members of QUIKRETE; HomeMade Modern, an online resource for smart modern home furnishing ideas; and the Home Projects Council, a think tank of home improvement experts.

“The project ideas people brought to life with just one bag of QUIKRETE® through this contest is truly amazing,” said Frank Owens, Vice President of Marketing for The QUIKRETE Companies. “The creativity, craftsmanship, and quality of all the submissions really made selecting the winners difficult, but I think the design, technical execution, and finished product of the top three helped them narrowly edge out some of the other competitors.”
