Green Parking Projects Recognized In OH And CA

GBCI’s Parksmart program for sustainability in parking facilities has certified a Proctor & Gamble site in Cincinnati, and is evaluating an automated parking structure in Oakland, CA.

The Parksmart program, administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), recently recognized a new green surface parking lot at Procter & Gamble’s Mason Business Center in Cincinnati, OH as a demonstrator site. The site is one of only six in the world recognized by the GBCI program for identifying and implementing best practices in sustainable surface parking design and operation. The green parking lot features innovative in-place asphalt recycling, LED lighting with sensors, landscaping improvements, and rainwater management.

Atlas10, a Cincinnati-based company, assessed the pavement conditions, procured resources, and managed the sustainable surface parking site project to conserve energy and construction materials and to reduce operating costs. “Sustainable surface parking benefits the community, environment and property owners,” said Mark Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas10. “It’s an honor to work with Procter & Gamble and the other construction partners to make sustainable parking a reality, and we are pleased that the project we orchestrated is now a demonstrator site.”

Paul Wessel, director of market transformation and development for Parksmart, said, “When designed with sustainability in mind, surface parking can help reduce energy consumption, improve air and water quality and safely connect neighborhoods and people. Atlas10’s forward thinking approach to surface parking can help increase the value of surface parking sites and help property owners work toward sustainability goals.”

The project was recognized during a presentation at Procter & Gamble’s Mason Business Center in February 2018 that also featured partners facility manager Jones Lang LaSalle, Neyra, SurfaceTech, and 10 Mile Creek.

Hive Automated Parking Structure in Oakland, CA

In other Parksmart program news this week, the first fully-automated parking structure in Northern California began operating. The Hive Automated Parking Structure in Oakland, CA is a venture of CityLift Parking and Signature Development Group.

“With the launch of the Hive Automated Parking Structure, we now provide a better parking solution for our tenants and their customers that is cost effective and environmentally sustainable,” said Mike Ghielmetti, President of Signature Development Group, which is based in Oakland. “It’s a parking system that represents the future of real estate.”

Built on a 1,600 square foot footprint, about the size of seven parking spaces, the Hive Automated Parking Structure increases the site’s parking capacity by almost six-fold to 39 vehicles. The structure used 69% less construction material per parking space. The parking facility is currently being certified by the GBCI’s Parksmart program, as the first of its kind in the U.S.

“CityLift Parking and Signature Development Group are based right here in Oakland, and to have this type of innovative technology being built right in our backyard says a lot about the success of this city,” says Oakland Mayor, Libby Schaaf. “These parking innovations are already spreading across the United States and I’m so proud that it started right here in Oakland.”

“As land in America’s urban core becomes scarce, automated parking solutions are the most cost and space effective way for developers and public agencies to meet parking requirements within increasingly smaller footprints,” says Scott Gable, CEO of CityLift Parking. “We look forward to working with other developers and architects in their projects to help meet their parking needs.”
