NEW SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: CO Legislation Guidance

System Sensor, a manufacturer of fire detection and notification devices, specializing in smoke detection, carbon monoxide (CO) detection, and notification technology, has developed a free online tool to help building professionals stay current on the state of CO detector codes and legislation in their locations.

To date, 29 states in the U.S. have passed specific CO detector legislation, and more are considering new legislation or updates to existing laws. In addition, in 2009, NFPA 720 updated its requirements for CO detectors.

“The CO detection landscape is constantly changing, so it can be very difficult to keep up. But knowing the codes and laws can be a big advantage for our customers,” said Richard Roberts, industry affairs manager for System Sensor and Honeywell Life Safety. “So we developed tools and training to help.”

Facility managers can quickly find the details of their state’s CO laws using an interactive map on the System Sensor website. The user clicks on a state to find existing legislation and links to other important information.

For a summary of the CO legislation passed in 29 states, users can also download a document here. Those states that have passed legislation (some are specifically for residential structures) are Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.
