The first Product Category Rule (PCR) for North American Power-Operated Pedestrian Doors and Revolving Doors is now available from the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA).
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor when selecting building materials, concern over the environmental impact of these products and their manufacturing processes has led to a greater need for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) throughout the industry. Recognizing this need, BHMA – the leading standards and certification body for builders hardware – took the lead in initiating the development of PCRs for the North American building industry. PCRs are required for organizations and other parties interested in preparing EPDs.
The PCR for Power-Operated Pedestrian Doors and Revolving Doors covers manual revolving, power-operated revolving, sliding, swinging, and folding doors for use by pedestrians, as well as their associated components such as motors, sensors and controls, where relevant. This PCR is the second one to be developed for the North American building industry, and was created by BHMA and several of its member companies, in conjunction with ASTM International. BHMA and its member companies also worked with UL Environment on the development of Builders Hardware UL 9004, which was published in 2014 as the first-ever PCR for North American builders hardware.
“Our commitment to developing Product Category Rules for several different builders hardware categories and applications demonstrates BHMA’s focus on environmental sustainability,” said Ralph Vasami, Executive Director of BHMA. “By creating uniform requirements for the comparison of environmental impact, we hope to make it easier for architects, contractors, and other building professionals when it comes to selecting materials for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED v4) and other sustainability programs.”
Both PCRs are available for download on the BHMA website.
