Stephen Jagun, president of the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) Nigeria chapter, was recently interviewed for an article that appeared in a Nigerian newspaper. Insight into the FM culture in that nation follows.
On January 8, Vanguard, a Nigerian newspaper, published an article on the maintenance practices in many high-rise buildings in the country.
Jude Nkoju, who authored the article in the paper’s “Viewpoints” section, wrote:
“High-rise buildings; high-rise pains”
Western House is a multistorey building located along Broad Street in the ever-busy Lagos Island Business District. The property which is one of the oldest in that landscape is owned by Wemabod Estates Limited, a member of the Oodua Group. The Oodua Group is jointly owned by the five South Western states of Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo and Osun. Western House which is a multi-tenanted building (most of the office spaces have been taken up by lawyers and medium scale business organizations) could be described as poorly maintained. Only one of the six elevators was in a functional state when Vanguard Features (VF) visited the imposing building penultimate week. Inside the building itself, most of the facilities (toilets and baths) were in very poor working conditions.
