Question of the Week: Anticipating Snow Removal

Posted by Heidi Schwartz

This week’s question comes from the Facilities Management Group on LinkedIn.

I am looking for suggestions as to what would be the best approach for determining cost effective snow removal services. Should the service be performed “one time” or “occurrence” based? Or is it more cost effective to base the service on “time and material?”

  1. When I figure my snow/ice removal budget, I look back at the past five years S/I costs and average out. This seems to work providing you’re using the same vendor as in the past. Some years you get hammered, some are fairly mild.

  2. Hi,

I base my Snow removal contracts based on Seasonal start to finish. No parameters on accumulation, type of snow fall or amount. I also do no limit the maximum accumulation. I do stipulate that above 2.5 cm of accumulation, snow must be removed 7/24, days, nights or weekends. If you have more questions, feel free to contact me.
