QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What To Do If Someone Has The Flu?

This Question of the Week comes from the Facilities Management Group on LinkedIn.

It’s cold and flu season, so what do you do when a critically important employee displays symptoms? Do you:

  1. Send the person home?
  2. Suggest a cold remedy?
  3. Tell him/her to quit whining?
  4. Let the employee make his/her own decision to behave like an adult?
  5. Get HR involved?
  6. None of the above/some other option

  1. Our outfit has a benefit of eight hours of sick leave earned per month. When someone comes in with or develops symptoms of illness, we’ll suggest that they go home and use that benefit. “The rest of us don’t want to share whatever you may have.” is a typical statement I use. Normally, it only takes a bit of encouragement and someone who’s feeling less than good will go home.
