QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Falling Metal Halide Lamps

Posted by Heidi Schwartz

This Question of the Week comes from the Facilities Management Group on LinkedIn.

Our factory has recently had multiple issues with metal halide lights separating from the light base and falling onto product on the factory floor. The latest occurrence was after we replaced all our lights and the bulb had been in place not longer than 60 days. We have invested in the higher quality, heavier weight, expensive O bulbs that are less susceptible to lamp rupture, but I would like additional feedback, if anyone has experience in this area.

  1. The real question is why are the lamps separating form their base? Is the root cause a lamp problem, in which case you need to contact the lamp manufacturer; or is the root cause an issue with the installation (tightening) of the new lamps. In ether case, you have a safety issue that must be resolved immediately.
