Greg Masse, a custodian at Louis Toffolon Elementary School in Plainville, CT is one of two winners of CloroxPro’s first-ever Champions of Clean contest. Masse embodies CloroxPro’s motto “Where clean means everything,” and was selected for his dedication to going above and beyond to help keep his school clean and healthy.
The Champions of Clean contest, which ran from January 8 to February 20, 2019, encouraged facility managers and cleaning professionals to nominate someone who puts it all on the line to keep their facility clean and healthy during cold, flu, and norovirus season and throughout the year.
The second winner of the Champions of Clean contest in the healthcare facilities category is Minnie Watson, an Environmental Services Tech at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. In her 10 years at the hospital, she has won the hearts of patients while being a stickler for cleaning protocols and making sure her team is the first line of defense against the spread of infections.
Tidy Tiger Awards
Masse recently founded a new program for the children at Toffolon Elementary School: “The Tidy Tiger Awards.” Surprised at how tidy some of the classrooms were when he would clean at night, Masse began leaving thank you notes on white boards to thank students. The students and teachers enjoyed these notes so much that he designed official Tidy Tiger doormats, which now are proudly placed out front of the tidiest classrooms each week.
When asked why she nominated Masse, facilities department office professional Sandy Bouchard said, “It certainly wasn’t easy to choose just one custodian that goes above and beyond since we have so many that do. Greg stood out, in my mind, by creating the ‘Tidy Tigers Award.’ Getting students involved in keeping things tidy teaches responsibility and gives them something to be proud of. It also gives the custodians more time to concentrate on areas that need more of their attention.” A tidier classroom not only leaves more time for the custodians to do a deeper cleaning, but it instills a sense of pride and ownership to the students. He tells students to carry these values outside the school as well and parents have thanked him for his encouragement.

Toffolon Elementary serves more than 400 students and is about 65,000 square feet, where the custodians work day and night to keep the facility clean. Greg says that CloroxPro™ products help him do his job. Since the building hosts multiple events each week for the 2,500-student district, Masse and his team make sure to clean and disinfect all touch points (door knobs, locker handles, bathroom flushers, etc.) and thoroughly clean each room so the students come in to a clean space each day.
Masse received a $7,075 cash prize in lieu of an all-expenses-paid vacation. When speaking about the recognition, he noted, “I’m floored…I’m just doing my job and I love what I do.”
