The SpecSeal® CP100 Connection Protection system from Specified Technologies, Inc. (STI) is designed to provide fire protection for curtain wall connection or anchor points located beneath the floor. It is a protective cover molded from high-temperature insulation intended to protect bottom-mounted curtain wall connections for up to two hours. These factory-supplied covers deliver more reliable performance than field-applied protective systems.
Curtain wall connections or anchor points located beneath the floor slab can be subjected to direct fire exposure that can compromise their integrity. The UL® Guide Information for Category XHDG, Perimeter Fire-Containment Systems has included general specifications for the protection of exposed curtain wall anchor points. Due to the lack of specific test data, the protection recommendations were somewhat vague leaving interpretation to project decision makers and/or local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
UL recently established a new category, the XHDI Category, to more clearly define what constitutes an acceptable level of anchor protection. SpecSeal CP100 Connection Protection is the first system within this new category and the only UL tested and certified system available for protecting exposed connections.
SpecSeal CP100 is UL Certified for up to two hours when used with systems tested according to ASTM E2307 within the XHDG, “Perimeter Fire Containment” category and XHDI, “Accessories for Perimeter Fire Containment” category.
The SpecSeal CP1OO is made with a refractory ceramic material that includes a proprietary intumescent technology, coupled with a compressible, low shrinkage, fiber blanket. It withstands two hours of fire exposure without breaking down, protecting and insulating the aluminum anchor to maintain the integrity of the connection.
The SpecSeal CP1OO can be quickly installed, offers visual inspection, and provides better temperature resistance when compared to SFRM or mineral wool. It has a maximum use temperature of 2,300°F and a melting point of 3,260°F with intumescent expansion at 320°F. Density is 14 to 18 lbs./ft3 and overall dimensions measure 16″ x 20″ x 5″.
“Unprotected curtain wall connections located beneath floor slabs are vulnerable to direct fire exposure, which can compromise integrity,” said James P. Stahl, Jr., CFPS, CDT, Vice President & General Manager, Engineering and Emerging Businesses, STI. “The SpecSeal® CP100 Connection Protection system delivers visual protection with compliance you can see, eliminating application and inspection guesswork, which ensures measurable performance and a more reliable outcome.”
