Increasing acts of terrorism over the past decade are just one kind of event that corporations in the 21st Century now have to manage and recover from – but many organizations do not survive. Such events have underlined how vital it is for organizations to be fully aware of the risks faced by their facilities and, in response, Jane’s Information Group has launched a new handbook designed to help companies protect facilities against the effects of terrorism, violent crimes, and natural disasters.

Jane’s Facility Security Handbook 2nd Edition allows organizations to assess how “at risk” their buildings and facilities are using vulnerability criteria and then provides procedures and systems to develop realistic, cost-effective, and sustainable security management practices.

Co-author of Jane’s Facility Security Handbook 2nd Edition, Shawn Fenn, says the launch comes at a time when companies have to take more responsibility for the security and recovery of their facilities in case of an incident or crisis.

“In view of heightened terrorist activity and other crises in recent times, it is more important than ever for organizations to know how to manage incidents in such a way that reduces confusion, inefficiency, and the possibility of harm,” said Fenn.

“How an organization responds to crises can have a direct impact on a companies’ brand image, share price, the extent of property damage, and even on fatalities – this handbook is critical for anyone wanting to minimize these effects – providing vital information on crisis management and communication, safety precautions, and recovery procedures.”

Jane’s Facility Security Handbook 2nd Edition provides an “all-hazards” approach to facility and building risk management, addressing the strategic, operational, and tactical considerations needed to mitigate incidents and emergencies arising from these threats.

The Handbook will be useful to security professionals at all levels as well as facility managers and operators, corporate security personnel, government agencies and military, transport operators, utilities companies, security equipment manufacturers and facility security consultants, academies, and institutions.

Up-to-date security concepts and procedures applicable to facilities are comprehensively covered, ranging from crime prevention techniques to crisis response and resilience management.

Other topics covered in the Handbook are:
• Prevention and Mitigation: site security management, site vulnerability, managing risk, building design, threat identification;
• Preparedness and Planning: principles of effective preparedness, business continuity planning, access control and equipment, incident management systems;
• Incident Management and Response: principles of effective response, immediate and long-term response procedures and communication, protecting reputation; and
• Recovery: effective recovery mechanisms, crisis management.

Other titles in the Jane’s Public Safety series include: Chem-Bio Handbook: Third Edition, Chem-Bio Handbook: International, Chem-Bio Web, Citizen’s Safety Guide, Crisis Communications Handbook, Mass Casualty Handbook (Hospital), Mass Casualty Handbook (pre-hospital), Safe Schools Planning Guide for All Hazards, School Safety Handbook: Second Edition, Teachers’ Safety Guide, Unconventional Weapons Response Handbook, Workplace Security Handbook, and RUSI/Jane’s Homeland Security & Resilience Monitor.
