Go To Bootcamp With ENERGY STAR This Summer

In the spirit of its ENERGY STAR “Battle of the Buildings,” EPA introduces this 90 day competition focused on energy and water savings.

Many facilities have achieved impressive energy savings with EPA’s ENERGY STAR “Battle of the Buildings,” and this summer the EPA is taking it to the next level with ENERGY STAR National Building Competition: BOOTCAMP.Energy Star

With registration set to close on July 31, 2016, this competition focuses on facility managers engaging occupants and facilities staff in creating a workplace culture of energy conservation. The BOOTCAMP will occur in the space of 90 days, beginning September 1, 2016.

How It Works:

  • Sign up by July 31, 2016 to compete to reduce energy use in your building. There’s also an option to compete to reduce both energy and water use.
  • Register up to five of properties for the competition (service providers can enroll five properties per client).
  • From September 1 to November 30, use BOOTCAMP Toolkits to share information with occupants and employees about what they can do to be more efficient with energy and water.
  • Within each building type category, the building with the greatest reduction in total weather normalized source energy or water use per square foot (as reported in EPA’s Portfolio Manager tool) will take top honors.

The Benefits:

  • Cut out energy waste and save money on utility bills.
  • Earn EPA recognition for environmental leadership.
  • Engage employees and boost workplace pride.
  • Deliver value to occupants in the form of a more efficient workplace.
  • Achieve lasting benefits for building bottom line in three months.
  • Use EPA-provided resources to save time and effort.

What Is Needed:

A Portfolio Manager® account. Use it to register for the competition. If new to this free benchmarking tool provided by EPA, you’ll need about an hour to set it up. (There are also brief videos that partipants can view for guidance in the process. Once registered, facility managers receive BOOTCAMP toolkits from ENERGY STAR.

Utility data. To measure improvement, facilities will be asked to enter data twice — once at the beginning of the competition (data between August 31, 2015 and August 31, 2016), and again at the end of the competition (data between September 1, 2016 and November 30, 2016). For concerns about sharing data, or timing with utility bills, please read the competition FAQ. If you qualify for recognition, a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect will be required to verify data.
