QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Effective Recycling Strategies

Posted by Heidi Schwartz

This week’s question comes from the BOMA International group on LinkedIn.

We are looking to change our recycling program. Does anyone use one that is efficient yet understandable to the persons in the office building?

  1. The most effective recycling program is one that makes participation easy while providing a reward to those participating. First, determine what items will be recycled by conducting a simple waste audit (translation: look in the trash can to identify recyclable items which are being thrown away). Next, contact your building management to see if a recycling is already in place. If so, collect your recyclables and divert them through your facility. If not, identify a hauler who is willing to come and pick up your materials. If you’re a large generator and are willing to allow the hauler to keep and sale your recyclables they may be willing to do this (hauling) at no cost to you. If you’re a small generator, you’ll either have to pay for the recycling to be hauled away or you can drop it at a free recycling collection center in your town. I recognize that this response is simplistic, but effective recycling is. If your question was meant to be aligned with “how do I get people to participate”, that’s a whole other topic altogether. I’d be happy to help you out in either case. Email me at

    Good luck!
