It’s the rare child who hasn’t spent part of his or her childhood playing with LEGO toys. Whether we flexed our imaginations by creating our own buildings, vehicles, and robots or preferred following detailed instructions to build our own Star Wars Millennium Falcon, the LEGO brick has become a childhood favorite across the globe.
If you’ve ever wished your LEGO creation could expand into a life-size LEGO building, that dream is about to become reality: Architects at Danish firm Bjarke Ingel Group (BIG) have designed a LEGO House that is currently under construction near the toy brand’s corporate campus in Billund, Denmark. The building, which resembles a stack of gigantic LEGO bricks and will offer visitors a variety of LEGO-themed exhibitions and activities, will celebrate its grand opening on September 28, 2017.
“LEGO House is a manifestation of the very essence of the LEGO idea,” Jesper Vilstrup, General Manager, LEGO House, said in statement. “This will be an amazing place where LEGO fans, their families and friends can experience – or re-experience – the playfulness of the LEGO universe. All activities are related to our philosophy that creative play promotes innovation. LEGO House will enable us to offer both adult and young guests the chance of stimulating both creativity and learning.”
The nearly 130,000-square-foot center will welcome an anticipated 250,000 visitors annually with both free and paid activities. Inspired by the toy itself, the LEGO House is comprised of 21 huge LEGO bricks stacked on top of each other. The blocks are staggered to create publicly accessible rooftop terraces and to allow natural light to enter the building.
The LEGO House will feature four color-coded Experience Zones, more LEGO bricks than any child could desire, and a “masterpiece gallery” featuring LEGO fans’ creations. LEGO Square inside the LEGO House, as well as the rooftop terraces, shop, restaurants and some play areas will be publicly accessible. Tickets will be required to enjoy the Experience Zones, and are scheduled to go on sale in June.
